You Must Not Blame Me If I Do Not Talk To Clouds

at Satellite66, 66 6th Street, San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, December 20, 2012 –You Must Not Blame Me If I Do Not Talk To Clouds, the latest installation from artist Robert Long, opens January 13th at Satellite66, shortly after its debut at Safe Space in St. Louis, Missouri. This immersive installation- composed of curious “Cloud Clocks,” time-lapse projections, and mathematical arrangements of string- furthers Long’s characteristic exploration of the relationship between reality and imagination.

Identifying himself more as a scientist or philosopher than as an artist, Long relies on his “inquisitive nature” as a guiding force. His works question the relationships between various binaries such as one’s personal space and the cosmos, the tangible and the intangible, and reality and imagination. These themes, especially the latter, are further explored in his choice of materials; Long frequently transforms the quotidian and recognizable by integrating them into fantasy worlds, asking the viewer to regress into childhood make-believe in order to fully appreciate the experiences created.

Long’s installation entitled You Must Not Blame Me If I Do Not Talk To Clouds creates an immersive dreamscape through the juxtaposition of clean, industrial acrylic structures and organic and ephemeral “clouds.” Surprisingly, this contrast in form and materials is both striking and comfortable to experience. The reflectivity of the structures allows the viewers to literally picture themselves within this fantasy world, again questioning the presence of boundaries between one’s imagination and reality.

Robert Long is a current MFA candidate at Washington University in Saint Louis who won the Best in Show award in 2005 while completing his BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute. Long has curated various exhibitions and shown in many group and solo exhibitions throughout Missouri.

Satellite66 is the newest gallery in San Francisco’s Central Market District, seeking to enrich the neighborhood with regular art exhibitions, and engage in public discourse with experiments in new media.

The Maltese Embassy is an ongoing curatorial project by Valerie Leavy. A tiny ambassador of art in San Francisco, the Embassy is dedicated to showcasing emerging contemporary artists with a focus on craftsmanship, concept, and aesthetic. FOR GALLANTRY.
